Insight On Me.

In my grade eight year, the time I am looking forward to the most is the week I will be spending at Trillium Lakelands Arts Camp. The reason why I am so excited for this is because I had such a marvellous time last year. TLAC is a great place that helps you meet and interact with other students throughout the Trillium Lakelands School Board. Not only do you meet friends, you also have to go to class as you would any regular day at Beechgrove. But the teachers at TLAC are wonderful, and assure you have a great time. The cabins and food are tremendous, as well. The cooks are professional, so there is no doubt you will l0ve the food. The bread they make fresh daily, is too die for. Not every student gets the privilege to go to TLAC. You have to have a decent grade average, have an interest in the arts and generally be an excellent student. I try my best during the year, to insure that I will be able to attend this extracurricular activity. Over all, I had a great time at TLAC 2009 and can’t wait to go back for year two.

What I am worried about most at the moment, is how my life will turn out in the long run. I anticipate that I will succeed in life. My ambition is to make it through high school, and go on to Ryerson University to major in something I am deeply interested in. I would then like to continue on and get an incredible career, while living in a charming house with my family. But who can tell for sure, if that will actually happen to me. I guess I can only hope. I am extremely anxious to live my life, and I will try to achieve my goals while I’m at it.

One of my three Goals for this year is to, use my leadership quality’s to help as many students and staff as possible. Not only, does this make me feel good about myself to know that I am making a difference. But it also gains respect from my fellow classmates. An additional goal I have set for myself is to be a superior remodel to the younger students. I understand that they look up to us, just like we looked up to the older students when we were young. I will try and have a positive attitude towards school and smile as much as possible. My last goal for the year is to become more fit. This is not because I think I’m obese, but I would like to build up my endurance. This is important to me because of figure skating and other sports. I intend on trying out for the sports teams again this year, and I think that being more fit could really help me. But then again, now there are more overweight people in Canada than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average, which means most people have met their New Year's resolution. I hope, throughout the year I can achieve all my goals.

Texting

In my opinion, I think students should not be allowed to use texting language in their reports. I find that school is for learning proper grammar, not for improper grammar. Texting language such as “OMG” or “LOL” should not be prohibited in the schools learning system. If students get used to texting language too much it could spoil up their spelling skills. Teachers should not want this for their students, since it with make it harder for the students in the long run.
Another reason why I think texting language should not be aloud, because not everyone understands it. Say you have an old professed that has no clue what “HBU” meant, you would fail.
My last reason why I think it is a terrible idea to allow texting language in school is because it shortens student’s vocabulary. Soon essays that were originally 200 words will be slashed to 150 because of short form.

In conclusion I would say that it is a terrible idea for school to go through with. I believe that some thing may change throughout the years but proper grammar should not be one of them.

America`s Next Top Model Real Or Fake

Dear Ken Mok, Feb. 26, 09
Nobody knows what to think of these new Reality T.V. shows such as America`s Next Top Model. Most people say that it is all bogus, while others by into the whole idea. Come on, as if millions of girls that start out as waitress tryout for the show and just happen to make it. Not to mention their perfect bodies. I don’t think so. From my perspective I think that it is all a bunch of lies and no one wants to be lied too. I believe that if you want to feel good about your job, you should not have to lie. You know what makes this whole scenario even worse, you don’t even care. Don’t expect to be in this business for much longer, because sooner than later all your secrets will be reviled. Let me tell you, you will have a lot of angry fans. What do you think you are going to tell them? That it seemed okay at the time! I don’t think that is going to cut it. Obviously these girls are fake. I am surprised that everyone has bought into it for such a long time. But let me tell you, they won`t for much longer. All I will do is laugh when I see your business go under.
Sincerely,
Ashley Williams

The Giraffe Explanation

Giraffe Explanation
By: Ashley
The giraffe is a long-necked, cud-chewing hoofed mammal of Africa, with extended legs and a fur pattern of brown spots they are truly a very unique animal. Giraffes are the tallest of all land animals. The Average male Giraffe can reach a height of 6m and the average female can reach the height of 5m tall.
Giraffes get most of their height from their long necks. There are seven vertebrates in a giraffe’s neck which is the same amount that are in a human’s neck as well. The vertebrates in human’s necks just do not extend as much as they do in a giraffe.
The reason that giraffes have such long necks is because of their way of life. Giraffes have very long necks so that they can reach leaves high in the trees. But scientist have recently discovered that during the mating season male giraffes fight with their necks to determine who gets to mate with the female giraffe.
The average giraffe lives for up to 20 to 25 year. In these years most female giraffes have 1 calf. The calf will depend on its mother for the first year of its life, and then it will grow independent.
As many other young animals are called different names, a baby giraffe is called a calf.
When a new giraffe is born it weighs around 45.359 to 68.039 kg. But as they get older they can reach the weight of 1,100 to 1,915 kg.
It`s amazing that an animal that only eats plants can be so large. Giraffes are herbivores which mean they are plant eaters. They mainly like to eat Acacia leaves that are high in trees. The tree branches have thorns which makes it hard for the giraffes to get to the leaves. Luckily the giraffes have long tongues that can reach through and grab them.

The giraffe is beyond doubt a very interesting animal. One of their key features is their spots. Giraffes have spots to camouflage themselves in with the trees. This makes it hard for their predators to find them. Not that they have many.
Another one of their unique features is their blue tongues. The giraffes tongue is blue because it has very few blood vessels. Because of this the tongue appears to be black. The animal eats a lot of thorny and prickly plants.
Since the giraffe is such a tall animal it has very few predators. Its main predator would be the lion. The lion tends to take out the baby giraffes and the weaker adults. Some of their other predators are hyenas and leopards. Giraffes also only rest periodically throughout the day so it is hard for their predators to get them in their sleep.
Giraffes can communicate with each other either through low pitch sounds or through touch. As giraffes intertwine their necks together is a show of affection toward each other.
Even though the numbers of giraffes have decreased in the past century, giraffes are not currently endangered, but listed as “lower risk” with rather steady populations. To keep giraffes at low risk of danger we have to continue to help them in any way possible. I would be ashamed for anything to happen to this amazing animal.

The Avalanche

One day 17 skiers went out to ski in the mountains of Rogers Pass in eastern British Columbia. They thought that it would be a fun, safe trip and that they would be back at home in a few days. To their surprise an avalanche hit and not everyone survived.

The skiers had set out on their trip. Their first day went smooth with sunshine and they felt satisfied. Then they met two other skiers that were also out backcountry skiing. They would have been the last people that the 17 skiers saw before the avalanche hit.

It was around Saturday afternoon when it struck. The skiers heard a deafening roar and watched the snow come tumbling down. They were shocked as the snow swept them away. The avalanche carried them in different directions. The skiers were tumbling head over foot down the hill and almost 5 meters below the snow.

After the avalanche was done it was time for the rescue team to come in. The rescue workers had a hard decision to make. It was who to save first. They went with the first person they saw. They would only dig people as far out as it took to see if they were still breathing. If they were not they were left in the snow as the rescue workers move on stay. But if they were alive they would have to dig themselves out the rest of the way.

Very few people survived this tragic avalanche that occurred on Jan. 8th 2003.

2nd Grade Bully

Hello everyone, my name is Ashley Williams and I am a bully. In grade 2 a new girl came to my school. She was different looking than everyone else in the class. I bullied this girl and today I feel terrible for doing this.
This all took place at Muskoka Beechgrove Public School. It was fairly early in the year of 2003 when I was sitting beside my friend in Ms. Annala`s class. Ms. Annala had told us we were going to be getting a new student. I figured that I was a fairly good student and even in grade 2 I liked to help others. I showed almost every new student that came to my school around the playground on their first day and I was not planning to stop anytime soon.
The new student had arrived. When she came into our class room Ms. Annala asked who would like show here around at recess. I put my hand up and I was picked. At recess I was to voluntarily show the new girl around outside.
At snack time I was talking with my friend. I asked her if she would help show the new kid around with me at recess. She said she didn`t really feel like it.

I did not want to show the new kid around all by myself because I barley new her. So, during snack time my friend and I made up a plan. Our plan was to leave her standing alone.
It was recess so I walked the new girl outside. We stood by the little white fence for a while but then I left. I said that I would be right back. But I didn’t come back at all. I went off to play with my friend. Meanwhile the new girl was standing there all recess waiting for me.

At the time I really didn’t feel like a bully. Now that a few years have gone by I know that what I did must have really hurt the persons feeling epically it being their first day. To make matters worse the student I bullied is one of my good friends now and whenever she can she reminds me of the horrible thing that I did. I can`t blame here though. Even though it is so hard to say, and I regret it now. I am a bully. For the new kid who knows who she is. I am terribly sorry for what I did to you.

If I was to put myself into this students shoe`s I would feel so unwelcome to a new school. I`m sure if I was this student that I would probably go home crying to say that that was the worst first day ever.

Samurai

Samurai

The Samurai people originated in Japan. They lived there life according to the code of Bushido which means “the way of the warrior”. To live this way they had to be loyal, respectful and be self disciplined. The Samurais had a lot of honour. In fact, they had so much honour that if they were defied they would commit seppuku now known as suicide. They would do this by rolling up in paper and getting a fellow Samurai to cut them vertical then horizontal down their stomachs. To make it worse there would be a man behind him to cut off his head after the cutting of the stomach was done.

The Samurais wore clothing that covered their face. They were usually covered head to toe in metal outfits. Some even wore hats with horns. The Samurai fought with many weapons but their well none weapon was the sword. At the age of 5 or 6 on your birthday you would get your first samurai sword (fake of course) to start to train. Rich kids went to a special school to learn how to become a Samurai others were taught by their fathers or grandfathers.

Ninjas

Ninjas
By: Ashley
Ninjas are cool, sneaky and fast people and they can be gone in a blink of an eye. They are so fast that they can drop a smoke boom and be gone before it fades away. They also never sweat. No human can kill a ninja only another ninja can.

Ninjas can crush a golf ball with two fingers. They start to train to be a ninja at the age of 5 or 6. At that time they are taught how to dislocate their bones. This helps them when they are older. Most of the ninjas weapons they dip in poison to kill their enemies. I don`t know if ninjas are superhero’s or villains but they sure are cool to learn about.

Spiders

Spiders

By: Ashley
Most of you have probably heard of the good old spider. I am going to tell you some more cool and new facts about this very interesting species.
Spiders are what you call an invertebrate which means they don’t have a backbone. They are also pollinators like bees. Spiders are not insects which most people think. They are their own kind. Tarantulas shed their furry skin as they grow, leaving behind what looks just like another tarantula.
When you think of a spider you think of a web, right? Well not every spider makes a web out of all 30,000. Most spiders have around six to eight eyes. When spider’s webs have been torn or ripped they will roll the ruined one up into to a ball and eat it. Then they will start their new web. My last few facts are that the male spiders are usually smaller then the females and spiders can be as small as a pin and reach the size of a dinner plate.

Constrictors

Constrictor

The Constrictor is a snake that kills its pray by strangling it. Its coils help to strangles it. The constrictor does not eat often but when it does eat it aims for a gazelle. This snake can also hang in trees and can reach up to 10 m long. The constrictor snake is not poisonous is if it bites you but it can eat you whole no problem. I hope you learned something new by reading about constrictors

P.S. I would upload a picture but they really creep me out

Komodo Dragon

Komodo Dragon
Vicious Predator

By: Ashley
Mr. Ferris
The Komodo dragon is a Carnivore. That means that it only eats meat. The Komodo dragon is also a predator. That not only means it just eats meat it also means it hunts and kills the meat it eats.
The Komodo dragon can eat its own wait. With larger animals like deer’s the Komodo dragon will slap them down with their strong tail and tear off meat as they hold on to the deer’s carcase. With animals like lambs the Komodo dragon with just eat whole (Bones and all).
If there is so an animal that is brave enough to kill and eat a Komodo dragon I would be very surprised. I am not positive but will all my research i could not find out what eats a Komodo dragon.
The Komodo dragon is in the same family as a lizard. The only difference is that the average male Komodo dragon is 3 meters long and weighs about 200 lbs. Their tails are as long as there body and they are no friendly to get up and personal with.

The Komodo dragon prefers to be in warm and dried out spaces. Some of the ecosystems you would find the Komodo dragon in are places like dry open grass ground, savannas and tropical woodland at low levels. For shelter they make holes with their huge claws and crawl into them for warmth.

Samuel Champlain’s
Diary

By:Ashley

Ill Feeling Dec 25, 1635
I woke up this morning with an ill feeling inside. My head is fuzzy and my right arm is feeling num. Don`t believe I will be doing much exploring today.

Niagara Falls July 6, 1610
I witnessed today what I would think should be one of the wonders of the world. It is a huge water fall in the shape of a horse shoe. I found it on the border of New York State and Canada. It was a marvellous sight to look at for hours and hours.
Huron Indians October 1, 1609
I had befriended the Huron Indians last year and today I helped them fight the Iroquois in a battle. There were a number of issues from fur trading to stealing land. I had been a long hard fight and I am glad to see the day done and hoping to get a good night’s rest.

Lake Champlain April 25, 1609
Today I set out to explore the St. Lawrence River for the King of France. It was a dark and gloomy day out today and the wind was cool. As we charted unknown waters we came upon a lake that I named after myself (Lake Champlain). It is on the border of Northern New York state and Vermont. It was quite an adventurist and successful day.

Quebec January 15, 1608
I t was a cold bitter day today in Quebec. I believe this could be an excellent fur trading center. I have lead 32 colonists to this area to settle. If they can survive the harsh frosty winter in Quebec I am sure more settlers will come. I believe that I might have founded Canada’s first City (Quebec)

The Bay of Fundy May 31, 1604
Today it was a bright and sunny day and we returned to Canada. We sailed around and charted most of the coast of Nova Scotia to the Bay of Fundy. Then we sailed down the coast to Cape Code and Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) and later to Rhode Island. We ended our night with a feast and the crew sat around and played numerous games.

Lillys First Dolly

Lilly’s First Dolly
Dreams Do come True

Have you ever heard of a remarkable young girl name Lilly. Lilly is seven years old and has already fought cacner twice. She is a very strong little girl and believes she can do anything she sets her mind too. Lilly has some problems. Not only has she fought cancer twice but she has also never had her own doll.

One day Lilly was at home sitting on the couch when her mom came in and sat beside her. Lillys birthday was coming up and her mom asked her
what she wanted.

Lillys eyes opened whide and in a strong voice she said "I would like a shiny dolly with a pink dress please..."

The doll that Lilly wanted was really expensive and the batteries were not included.

Lillys mom didn`t know what to say except for "We will have to wait and see."

The next morning Lilly woke up to the sound of her brothers alarm clock across the hall. Then her mom walked into her room and told her she had to get ready for her doctors apointmate she had that day.

Lilly had nothing against going to the doctors. In fact she was excited to get the lolly pop at the end of the check up. They walked into the doctors office and signed in. They waited in the waiting room untill Lillys name was called.
Lilly walked into the doctors room to see a sad exspretion on the doctors face. Lilly new it couldn`t be good. Then he said he had some bad news so Lilly pluged her ears. Then the words came out.

"I`m so sorry, but you have been diagnosed with cancer again Lilly." said the doctor. Then the tears came pouring out.

When they got home all Lilly could do was cry. She coldn`t accept the fact that she had cancer again. She remembered how hard it was.
To go through it all again would be awful. She had grown her long blond beautiful hair out and for what? She had, had enough.

The next day Lilly had to go into the hospital for Kimo. As she layed asleep in the hospital bed her mom quietly came in and put the shiny doll with a pink dress down to lay there beside her.
